FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
Look. Listen. Learn. Be Aware. Fire Can Happen Anywhere.
The first Saturday in the month of October, is the start of Fire Prevention Week.
“Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere.” is the theme for 2018 Fire Prevention Week. The Fort Thomas Fire Department has started early with getting the message out. We have been giving tours of the fire department and bringing the fire safety house to all of the elementary schools in Fort Thomas. The children are excellent students and their parents may have been getting a lot of questions about smoke detectors, escape plans and meeting places. These are just some of the things we teach during the tours and at the fire safety house demonstrations. For homework, we have encouraged the students to talk to their parents about fire safety and escape plans at their own homes.
For the last five years the Fort Thomas Fire Department has teamed up with the Highlands High School Film and Broadcasting Department to create a Public Service Announcement for Fire Prevention Week. The only requirement is that they must incorporate the theme of the current year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign. Mr. Poff, the head of the film department, assigns a group of students to the task. The students will present several ideas to the fire department and we pick which one best conveys the message to the public.
This year the group consisted of Jessica An, Katie Hall, and Melanie Parsons. The concept they created was perfect. You can view the video below:
So, just like in the video, you and your children can be detectives and investigate fire safety around the house. Go to firepreventionweek.org for more information and fire safety sheets that can be downloaded.

Inspections
The Fort Thomas Fire Department performs fire safety, life safety, and occupancy inspections of businesses, multi-family dwellings and places of assembly in the city of Fort Thomas. Also, burn permits are issued after an inspection of compliance to private citizens for the burning of brush.
During the months of March and November, when you change your clocks, please remember to change your smoke detector batteries.
