Fire Prevention

Public Service Announcement

Above is the youtube link for this year’s Public Service Announcement that was produced by Highlands High School students for Fire Prevention Week.  This year’s theme is “Don’t wait, check the date.”  This is in reference to smoke alarms having to be replaced every 10 years. The students who put the PSA together were Chay Rust and Joey Blanchet. The star in the PSA is Grant Luersen. All are seniors and belong to Highlands High School Film and Broadcast Class. Their teacher is Bill Poff. The American Red Cross also provided smoke alarms to the students to use as props if needed.  The Red Cross can also provide smoke alarms to those who need them. Visit for more information on this program, or contact the Fort Thomas Fire Department at 441-8393. This is the third year that the Highlands students have taken on this assignment. Each year Mr Poff assigns a group of students to the project. The Fire Department will meet with the group at the school and make a small presentation to them on what Fire Prevention Week is about and what is the current theme.  They are given little direction which allows them to use their own creativity. We ask them to come up with several ideas and present those ideas to the Fire Department.  When they have their ideas ready they will make a presentation to the Fire Department.  The Fire Department will then choose the best one or two ideas to use.The students are also asked to visit the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) website.  The site contains a large amount of information on various fire safety issues including the Fire Prevention Week theme.  With the PSA being a school project they are able and encouraged to use graphics that the NFPA site provides. When the students have completed the PSA they present it to the Fire Department. If there are any issues, the students will make the adjustments.  So far they are three for three in not needing any adjustments. The PSA is also played on the video display at the Highlands Football game before or during Fire Prevention Week.  This year Fire Prevention Week is October 9th-15th.

The Fort Thomas Fire Department performs fire safety, life safety, and occupancy inspections of businesses, multi-family dwellings and places of assembly in the city of Fort Thomas. Also, burn permits are issued after an inspection of compliance to private citizens for the burning of brush.

During the months of March and November, when you change your clocks, please remember to change your smoke detector batteries.
